Credit Reporting Errors

When the credit bureau goes silent…

You’ve found a mistake on your credit report. Maybe it’s a loan you never took out, a payment you did make that’s showing up as missed, or an account that doesn’t even belong to you. You do the responsible thing – you file a dispute with the credit bureau.

Then… nothing. Crickets.

Unfortunately, this radio silence isn’t unusual. Many consumers follow all the right steps only to be ignored, dismissed, or sent a canned response that resolves nothing. The power imbalance between you and the credit bureaus is extreme. But here’s the truth: you don’t have to just accept being ignored.

Credit lawyers tip the scales of justice back in your direction. If your credit report dispute is ignored, credit lawyers help you fight back and win.

A trumpet stands before a city skyline and text implies that credit lawyers help make some noise when your credit bureau dispute is being ignored.

Fact vs. Fiction: What Really Happens with Credit Disputes

FICTION: Credit bureaus fix all mistakes within 30 days.

FACT: While they’re supposed to investigate and respond to disputes within 30 days under the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA), they often fall short. Investigations can be superficial, or worse, skipped entirely.

FICTION: If you don’t hear back, there’s nothing more you can do.

FACT: You have legal rights under the FCRA, and ignoring a legitimate dispute is a violation. That means you can take legal action, and yes, you can sue.

Why Do Credit Bureaus Ignore Credit Report Disputes?

Here’s the less-than-encouraging answer: volume and automation.

Credit bureaus like Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion handle millions of disputes each year. Most are processed using automated systems, and some are dismissed as “frivolous” without a real investigation.

Even if you send in a detailed, accurate dispute, there’s no guarantee it’ll get a human review. That’s where credit lawyers come in – they bring legal pressure that automated systems can’t ignore.

Your Rights Under the FCRA

The Fair Credit Reporting Act is the federal law that protects your rights as a consumer. Under this law:

  • You have the right to a fair and accurate credit report.
  • You have the right to dispute inaccuracies and have them corrected or removed.
  • The credit bureau has an obligation to investigate and respond to your dispute within 30 days.
  • If the information provider (like a bank or lender) confirms the error is inaccurate, the bureau must delete or correct it.
  • If the bureau fails to comply? You may be entitled to damages.

You can read more about disputes by reviewing Experian’s official disputes page, which outlines the basics – but use caution and don’t stop there.

When things go off the rails, it’s time to bring in professionals. We highly recommend filing all disputes through certified mail because doing so creates a document trail and holds bureaus accountable.

Additionally, speaking with one of our credit lawyers today can help jump start your credit recovery.

What to Do If Your Credit Report Dispute Is Ignored

Ignoring your credit report dispute isn’t just rude and disrespectful on the part of the credit bureaus- it’s completely illegal. But do you know what to do next?

  1. Track the Dates and Follow Up Early (30 Days). Start by tracking when you submitted your dispute. The FCRA requires bureaus to investigate and respond within 30 days. If it’s been longer and you’ve heard nothing, or you got a vague response that didn’t address the issue, or a response that falsely stated the information you disputed is correct – you’re most likely dealing with an FCRA violation.
  2. File a Complaint with the CFPB. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) allows you to file complaints online. This alerts regulators to your issue and creates a paper trail. While it doesn’t guarantee results, it adds another layer of accountability. File a CFPB complaint here.
  3. Seek Legal Help (Yes, Really). This is where credit lawyers make a difference. If your dispute is ignored or mishandled, a lawyer can force the bureau to fix your report, pursue financial compensation for any harm done, and sue the credit bureau or information provider for violating your rights. Or, if you prefer to have credit lawyers handle everything, they can gather evidence and prepare and submit the dispute too.

You don’t have to keep sending letters into the void. A lawyer for credit report errors knows how to hit the system where it hurts – and get results.

Can I Sue Credit Bureaus for an Incorrect Credit Report?

Short answer-Yes!

Long answer- There are a number of scenarios in the credit dispute process that give you the right to sue the credit bureaus for failing to uphold their legal obligations under federal law.

For instance, under the Fair Credit Reporting Act you can sue credit bureaus if they fail to correct false information, ignore your dispute entirely, remove false information from your credit report only to have it reappear later, or inform you that their (clearly inadequate) investigation confirmed that the errors are correct.

How Much Can I Sue for Credit Report Disputes?

It depends on the damage. The law allows for actual damages (e.g. lost job opportunities, higher interest rates, emotional distress), punitive damages, and attorney’s fees, so working with credit lawyers costs you nothing out of pocket.

In some cases, people have been awarded thousands, even tens of thousands of dollars for credit report errors that caused financial harm. That’s why getting legal help from credit lawyers isn’t just smart, it can be life changing.

There are an endless variety of ways that credit report errors cause financial harm, much of which likely warrants a lawsuit. For instance, inaccurate credit reports have been known to:

  • Cause mortgage applications to fall through
  • Prevent people from renting apartments
  • Increase loan interest rates dramatically
  • Cost people job offers, especially for positions that require background checks

Approximately 1 in 3 credit reports contains an error. And many of those errors cause real, measurable harm. You shouldn’t be penalized for a mistake you didn’t make and you absolutely shouldn’t be ignored when you try to fix it.

Warning Signs You Need Credit Lawyers for Your Credit Report

If any of these sound familiar, don’t wait:

  1. You’ve disputed a credit report error and heard nothing back
  2. You received a vague or incomplete response from the credit
  3. bureauThe same error keeps reappearing on your report
  4. You’ve been denied credit, housing, or employment due to a known error
  5. You feel overwhelmed or unsure about your rights

Still wondering “Do I need a lawyer for credit report disputes?” The answer depends on how much frustration you’re willing to take on alone. When the stakes are high, and the system isn’t cooperating, it’s worth calling in experienced credit lawyers to defend your rights, push for a speedy recovery, and fight to get you money.

Real Life Stories: Don’t fight billion-dollar credit bureaus on your own

Credit lawyers know the federal laws inside and out, and they know how to take action and get things done when disputes go ignored. The law is clearly on your side, but it helps immensely to work with someone who knows how to use it.

Check out examples of when people just like you, utilized our legal services and got real results!

Donald Went from Denied and Defeated to Debt-Free

Donald, a single father working two jobs, applied for an apartment closer to his son’s school. Despite his solid income and spotless rental history, his application was denied. Why? His credit report showed a repossessed vehicle, one he never owned.

Donald tried disputing it on his own with Equifax and TransUnion. He sent letters. He made calls. He got nowhere.

When Donald contacted Consumer Justice Law Firm, we jumped in fast. Our attorneys investigated the account, demanded documentation from the furnisher, and proved the error was due to a mixed file – his report had merged with someone else’s due to a similar name.

Within 60 days, the false account was removed and Donald was compensated for the denial and stress.

Jamal Went From a Mortgage Denial to a Dream Home

Jamal had been working hard to save for a house. He had a great job, excellent credit, and pre-approval from his bank. But when he went to finalize the loan, his credit score had mysteriously dropped 120 points overnight.

Turns out, Equifax’s glitch from the previous year had hit him hard. (Yes, that infamous 2022 bug that affected 2.5 million consumers.)

Jamal tried calling the bureau and filed disputes, but the damage had already been done. He lost the home – and his deposit.

Consumer Justice Law Firm helped Jamal file a formal claim against Equifax. We obtained documentation proving that the score drop was caused by their negligent software error, not anything Jamal had done.

Not only was the error corrected, but Jamal also recovered his deposit and received a five-figure settlement. Within six months, he closed on a better home than he’d originally planned for.

Tanisha Went From Financial Chaos to Credit Clarity

Tanisha opened a retail store after the pandemic, using her personal credit to get business funding. But within months, she started getting calls from creditors about accounts she didn’t open.

Her credit report had been compromised by identity theft. The fraudulent accounts dragged her score down, causing her credit lines to shrink, just when she needed them most.

Despite sending dispute letters with police reports and ID theft affidavits, the credit bureaus kept falsely “verifying” the accounts.

Tanisha contacted Consumer Justice Law Firm. Our legal team reviewed the case, communicated directly with the data furnishers, and forced the bureaus to delete the accounts. We also helped her place long-term fraud alerts and freeze her credit.

She recovered financially, and the compensation she received helped stabilize her business.

Marcus – From Hopeless to Heard

Marcus had a solid job and was supporting his parents after his father’s stroke. But a false foreclosure record on his TransUnion credit report made it impossible to refinance his home at a lower rate.

He filed multiple disputes and sent in proof that the foreclosure was never his – but each time, TransUnion said the information was accurate.

After months of fighting alone, Marcus called Consumer Justice Law Firm. Our attorneys subpoenaed records, obtained bank documentation, and found the real source of the error – a clerical mistake by a loan servicer that had been misreported.

Not only did we get the record removed, but Marcus received damages for the overpayment and mental anguish.

Hold credit bureaus accountable for ignoring your credit report dispute! Best of all? Working with credit lawyers won’t cost you a single cent out of pocket.
